It’s M for memorable.
For our 1st anniversary, we went for a nice dinner at M at the Fringe.
The restaurant sets a precedent for Hong Kong’s fine dining scene when it opened its doors in 1989 at the historical location of HK’s Fringe Club. M’s culinary inventiveness, coupled with its classy yet casual setting, quickly set a new standard for dining in Asia. Today, after 20 years, M remains a very much well-loved Hong Kong classic haunt, both for the locals as well as for visitors.
The food is contemporary, with tinge of Mediterranean and French influence. We ordered 2 starters and a main to share. One of M’s signature dish, the crispy suckling pig, paired surprisingly well with grainy mustard and apple sauce. Portions for starters were on the small side but that just means more room for dessert! The pavlova is rumoured to be oh so feathery light and good but too bad I’m not a huge fan of meringue anything and went for the promotion item of the week instead. Unlike most, the sticky toffee pudding with a rich butterscotch sauce we had was not overly sweet and tasted even better with the black coffee.
All in all, the food was pretty good, the ambiance was great and the company lovely. It was a memorable dining experience.
After a long-standing, 20 good years, sadly M at the Fringe will be closing this coming December 31, due to the government’s plans to renovate the historical landmark in which it’s located. Meanwhile, they are still searching for a new home.
So I decided to bring Dad and Mom here for lunch while M is still located at the Fringe. :P
The other reason for returning is that in celebration of their 20th anniversary, they are having a “2o Dishes for $20 for 20 weeks” campaign. Over the course of 20 weeks, at one dish per week, M is featuring 20 classics and favourites, selected from 20 years of menus, for just HKD20! (about S$4 only!!) :P :P
Not only is M a perfect venue for a romantic dinner with the special someone, it’s a perfect setting for a lovely afternoon tea with girlfriends too. Wherever it may be, hopefully the new venue will continue to exude the same charm and charisma, as its predecessor had captured the hearts of many over the last two decades.
Other restaurants under the M restaurants group include M on the Bund and The Glamour Bar both in Shanghai and the recently opened Capital M at Beijing.
