When we were much younger, whenever we decided that we liked a book, my Dad would end up getting the entire series for us. The days of Bookworm Club, Secret Seven and Sweet Valley High, we were proud owners of every single book. Recently, I found out that my Aunt in KL shares the exact same trait as her elder brother too.
She had gotten Dad to bring above cookbook to me upon hearing that I’ve been hanging around the kitchen quite a bit these days. For reference, she had said. As the title “Hawkers’ Fair Simplified” implies, the book contains easy recipes that require barely more than 3 steps to prepare.
Not wanting to letdown a well-meaning Aunt, I picked out a few recipes to try.
The bilingual instructions are helpful and clear and the dishes surprisingly uncomplicated to make. And I must say they tasted pretty good too. Thrilled with my accomplishment, I rang Aunt to thank her for the useful little book. The next thing I know? Yes, the entire collection of the Dai Pai Dong cooking series found their way to where I am. : D
Before you think I’ve morphed into some wok and spatula wielding fiend and attempting my very own version a Julie/Julia by cooking my way through these, no I’m not about to―even though I’m a fan of the movie and own a copy of the book― for reasons that are obvious enough. I mean, as much as I like Chinese food, I can’t possibly have it everyday, right?
