As the sweltering heat of summer abates throughout most of Japan and morning and evening temperatures begin to fall, what better ways to enjoy the cooler season than to gather around the pit.
Grilled meats, squid, rice balls, pumpkins, eggplants, onions, bell peppers, carrots, shiitake mushrooms, doused in generous portions of lip-smacking tare .Bringing up the rear, it goes without saying, was good old yakisoba.
The weather continued to beckon and it was all we could do to resist bringing our food outside. Toshi’s sandwiches. Teruko’s onigiri and shijimi miso jiru. Tamami’s platter of side dishes. Teresa’s appetite. And a tumbler of hot coffee to wash down everything.
Food tastes so much better when eaten in season.
Autumn.
A season of harvest.
A season of hearty appetites.
wow the picnic bento looks so pretty! I wonder if all Japanese ladies go to finishing school and graduate knowing all about food presentation. I mean, how do you cut bread so evenly? ;D
